Looking for a Recommendation

Has anyone out there read White Teeth by Zadie Smith or seen the Masterpiece Theatre adaptation? It was briefly mentioned on a professional email list I belong to, and my curiosity was piqued.

Yeah, I read it. If I had to, I might characterize it as “Anglo magical realism.” I realize the author is not anglo in the traditional sense of the word, nor are her characters, but in the sense that the story takes place in Britain. Yet it has a sort of nonchalance about horribleness that I’ve seen particularly in realismo magico. It was interesting but I didn’t see what the fuss was about, myself. Diana Evans’ 26a was much better IMHO.

Oh my gosh, is there anything you haven’t read? ;) I’m envious.

Thanks for the info. It doesn’t sound all that impressive. I am always suspicious, too, of best sellers. They often don’t do much in the way of challenging the status quo. I think I’ll keep this one on the maybe list.

I guess I just have a lot of time on my hands.

    ;)

I got about halfway through and couldn’t finish. Well, I could have finished, I guess, but I didn’t really see a reason to. It’s not poorly written, but it’s not particularly captivating either. It was an easy book to let go of in my sorting process.
